Hair transplants to hide scars

Hair transplants are not only good for those people who are looking to restore the health of their natural hair but also for patients who want to improve other slight physical imperfections.

Concealing scars, even those that are not related to hair transplant procedures, is a major reason people opt for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Dr. James Marotta is a dual board-certified plastic surgeon on Long Island, offering the most advanced treatments for cosmetic concerns throughout the body.

Scar revision vs. camouflage

When scarring does result from a hair transplant or other cosmetic procedure, there are two methods that are most effective at reversing the results.

Scar revision excises or changes the shape of the scar entirely, while camouflage is a technique where hair follicles are transplanted directly into the scar itself, effectively concealing it from natural sight. The method for fixing hair transplant scars is specific to the situation and the procedure that was completed, as each hair transplant patient has unique issues which can influence which approach is taken. The most significant factor that needs to be taken into consideration before camouflaging is the amount of donor hairs that are still on the scalp or body itself.

What is FUE?

FUE or follicular unit extraction involves the removal of hair follicles from a donor area of the scalp for transplantation into an area where more hair is needed. This automated system uses pneumatic pressure to gently harvest healthy hair follicles and implant them in a random, natural-looking pattern.

How does FUE work to camouflage scars?

While the process for transplanting hair follicles into scar tissue versus normal skin is the same, scars can present some challenges. In order for transplanted hair follicles to survive, the recipient area must have sufficient blood supply.

As scar tissue may have reduced blood supply, hair restoration in such areas may be more difficult. This may be especially true for thick scars. Conversely, scars that are too thin may not be capable of supporting growth or holding the transplanted follicles properly. Therefore, it is essential to seek an experienced specialist such as Dr. Marotta to perform this procedure.

Who is a candidate for this treatment?

Candidates are men and women who would like to camouflage scarring on their scalp by restoring or enhancing their natural hair growth in the affected area. Patients should have a sufficient amount of healthy hair from which to harvest hair follicles for transplant. Depending on the nature of your scarring, Dr. Marotta may recommend scar revision in place of or in addition to hair restoration. Dr. Marotta’s extensive experience and skill ensure that each patient receives precise and personalized treatment for optimal results.

Preparing for your treatment

Two weeks before your procedure, you will need to stop taking any medications or supplements that may thin your blood, including NSAIDs. In addition, you will need to avoid smoking for one week and consuming alcohol for three days before your procedure. If you have light hair, you may need to dye your hair three days prior to your appointment. While many patients return to work the following day, you may want to plan to be away from work for several days.

What to expect on the day of your procedure

Your FUE treatment will be performed under local anesthesia.

Just before your treatment, the donor area of your scalp will be cut short for harvesting. This method helps your follicles remain intact for successful transplantation. Next, Dr. Marotta will create recipient sites in and around the scarred area, paying careful attention to the angle and direction of each transplant in order to achieve results that appear entirely natural. Dr. Marotta will meticulously sort the harvested hair follicles by size before placing them in their permanent locations.

Recovery

Immediately after your treatment, you may notice some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. However, these side effects should be mild. You will need to avoid touching your transplanted hair with your hands or other objects, including combs.

Many patients return to work the following day, although you may need an additional day or two, depending on the extent of your treatment and your recovery speed. You will be able to return to light exercise after about two days. In order to recover as quickly and smoothly as possible, you should avoid alcohol for one week after your treatment. In 10 days, you will be able to shampoo, brush, style, and care for your hair normally.

Results

You will notice your results develop over several months after your procedure, with the majority of growth taking place between five and 12 months. Your scarring will gradually become less and less visible until it is undetectable. Results from FUE for scar camouflaging are permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments will I need?

Because hair transplant into scar tissue is generally more challenging, you may need several treatments to achieve optimal results. The exact number varies depending on each patient’s specific circumstances.

If I need scar revision, will that be an additional surgery?

For thick or raised scars, Dr. Marotta may inject your scar with corticosteroids to flatten it, making it less visible and more ideal for follicle transplantation. During your consultation, Dr. Marotta will advise you on what method or combination of methods will provide the best results.
