How to protect your hair from dry air

How to protect your hair from dry air

With autumn in full swing and winter on the way, recent hair transplant recipients need to protect their new hair against harmful dry air.

Special considerations after a hair transplant

Immediately after your hair transplant, you'll notice some tenderness, reddening of the skin and minor swelling. These symptoms typically subside within a few days of the procedure and will continue to improve over the next few weeks. After your transplanted hair grows, the follicles will go dormant and the new hair will fall out – this is completely normal. After this initial shedding period, the hair will grow in normally. It will generally take several weeks before you see your desired results.

Your doctor will likely prescribe a mild pain reliever the initial discomfort. You will also receive instructions on how to care for your scalp in the weeks following your hair transplant. Typically, you will be able to shower and wash your scalp the day after your surgery and you can resume most activities within a week.

Protecting your new hair this winter

When you receive a hair transplant during the cooler months of the year, you may be concerned about defending the new growth from harmful dry air.

To protect your hair, Self magazine suggested washing your hair less frequently and never combing or brushing your hair when it's wet. After you shower, your hair may be more susceptible to breaking. Likewise, using a blow dryer may further damage the structure of the hair and make it look thinner.

As your new hair begins to grow, only use gentle shampoo and conditioner. That means it's time to ditch the 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner.

According to London-based barber Daniel Davies, 2-in-1 products can't effectively clean hair of sebum and impurities because they do not allow hair cuticles to properly open and close. Davies noted that a cleaning shampoo with open the cuticles and wash away impurities, and a good conditioner will close them again. When the products are combined into one, this process won't happen, and a full cleansing cannot be achieved.
