The different types of hair loss

Millions of Americans must content with hair loss, but did you know that there are different names for the levels of this affliction? All of the names begin with alopecia, which simply means hair loss. The proceeding label describes the degree or location of the hair loss. Marotta Hair Restoration has broken them down below.

Androgenetic alopecia
Patients with this form of alopecia will experience a progressive form of hereditary hair loss. It is also known as pattern baldness in both men and women.

Alopecia areata
This form of alopecia is a more concentrated version of hair loss. Patients who have this autoimmune condition will typically experience the loss of hair in various patches on their scalp and body.

Alopecia totalis
Alopecia totalis is a more advanced form of alopecia areata. With this condition, patients lose all the hair on their scalp rather than experiencing patchy hair loss.

Alopecia barbae
Do you have trouble growing a beard or have you experienced hair loss specifically concentrated in the beard area? You may have alopecia barbae. It can range in severity from patchy hair loss to complete loss of the beard.

Alopecia universalis
While uncommon, alopecia universalis is the most severe of all these types. It will cause complete hair loss on the entire body, scalp, eyebrows and beard.

Hair loss comes in many different forms, and it can be extremely useful to understand the various types. However, not all patients are suitable candidates for hair or beard transplants.
